The guys and dolls of the title are the fictional Broadway characters created by Damon Runyon. And so, the show opens in ‘Runyonland’ – a comic-book Times Square – where cops, con-men, gamblers, girls, tourists, touts and Salvation Army-types parade.
Nathan Detroit, who operates a highly illegal dice game, is feeling the heat from Lieutenant Brannigan of the New York Police Department and needs to raise $1,000 to keep his floating crap game afloat. In a bid to acquire the $1,000, Nathan lays a bet with Sky Masterson, the highest player of them all, that he cannot take Sergeant Sarah Brown of the Save-a-Soul Mission with him on a trip to Havana, Cuba. Sky duly sets about attempting to win the bet, even although Miss Sarah, who is a very beautiful doll indeed, don’t go no place.
Meanwhile, Nathan keeps jilting Miss Adelaide, the nightclub chantoosie, to whom he has been engaged for 14 years, giving her a fierce case of psychosomatic sniffles.
After a series of crazy complications, aided and abetted by his sidekicks, Nicely-Nicely Johnson and Benny Southstreet, Nathan gets his game, Sky comes down to earth, Sarah saves a soul and Adelaide gets rid of her cold – a safe bet for a happy ending!
“Guys & Dolls” boasts some of musical theatre’s greatest numbers, including ‘Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat’, ‘I’ve Never Been in Love Before’, ‘Luck Be A Lady’ and not least the title song itself. We’ll lay you eight to five it’ll make you very happy! BOOK NOW!
