Supporting
Innovative New
Theatre

At Aberdeen Arts Centre, our mission has always been to nurture and showcase the vibrant artistic talent of the north east of Scotland. In partnership with Scottish Youth Theatre, we launched 'Scratch That' in later 2024 - an innovative platform designed to empower emerging artists aged 18–28 to bring their creative visions to life.

The Genesis of Scratch That

Recognising a need for accessible opportunities for young creatives, 'Scratch That' was conceived to provide a supportive environment where artists could test new ideas and receive invaluable audience feedback. We sought four original performances, each between 10–20 minutes, embracing a diverse range of artistic expressions—from spoken word and musical theatre to drag performances and devised works.

Comprehensive Support for Artists

Selected artists received extensive support to transform their concepts into polished performances:

  • Performance Space: The opportunity to stage their work in our main auditorium.
  • Mentorship: Guidance from acclaimed theatre-maker Jordan Blackwood, offering insights and expertise to refine their work.
  • Curated Feedback: Advice and support from industry professionals, technical teams and live audiences.
  • Resources: Access to rehearsal space at Aberdeen Arts Centre (including the Children's Theatre), technical assistance, and a production budget to ensure their visions were fully realised.

The Showcase Event

On 12 February 2025, the culmination of this journey was presented to a live audience at Aberdeen Arts Centre. Emerging artists Annabel Lunney, Carly Wilson, Ciaran Drysder, and Libby Taylor took centre stage, each delivering a unique and compelling performance. The event was hosted by Jordan Blackwood, who masterfully wove together the distinct narratives, highlighting the rich tapestry of talent in our region.

From being transported back to the 80s to probe feelings of power in a young group of Aberdeen’s Soccer Casuals, to an intimate and insightful disclosure of a body’s journey with Long COVID - from questioning friendships and place within a community in an intense rural Scottish whodunnit, to the deconstruction of memory and the fourth wall in the design of a play - Scratch That’s artists explored unique perspectives on belonging, relationships and identity.
