Citymoves Dance Agency

Citymoves was born in 1987, after Aberdeen City Council created the role of Scotland’s first dance teacher for the elderly and disabled. Today, it continues to operate as a small, community-based charity, running over 20 weekly studio classes with the aim of nourishing its community's wellbeing and dance careers.

Through its open-door policy, Citymoves welcomes a diverse range of artists and collectives, enabling Aberdeen’s dance community to showcase its creative diversity. There really is a class for everyone. Since the 90s the school has offered everything from belly dancing, to trapeze and Brazilian martial arts. And of course, dance classics including ballet, contemporary and, jazz, are always up for grabs.

With a clear objective that has not strayed since the beginning, Hayley Durward, CEO of Citymoves, says, “We strive to support people of all ages and abilities to access dance” - a quality that has significantly contributed to its success.

During the past couple of years, the company has hosted its annual festival of dance, DanceLive; celebrated its 35th anniversary; and performed its spring show at Aberdeen Arts Centre alongside many, many other performances.
